Sunspots and Hyperpigmentation

Sunspots and hyperpigmentation treatment before and after

Sunspots and Hyperpigmentation

Excessive sun exposure and minimal usage of sunscreen can over time cause damage to your skin. Sunspots, hyperpigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines and dry skin are the typical skin concerns caused by sun exposure and are generally harmless but can progress if left untreated. It is important that you are always wearing an SPF on your face and body. Nonetheless, if you have areas of hyperpigmentation on your face and body, or your skin looks dry and damaged, then Azthetics recommend this treatment for you.

What are sunspots and what caused them?

Sunspots are type of hyperpigmentation caused by direct exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet rays (UV) or artificial UV sources, such as sunbeds. Sunspots are generally harmless areas of pigmentated skin, that appear as flat and smooth brown spots. They are the result of melanin that has leaked out from healthy melanocytes following UV damage. These type of spots tend to develop on areas where the body is most exposed to the sun like the face, chest, hands, shoulders and the back. Our skin produces melanin, the pigment that gives our skin colour. Hyperpigment can also be caused by hormonal imbalances and is particularly common in those with naturally darker skin types.

How does laser therapy for hyperpigmentation work?

To treat sunspots and hyperpigmentation we use our award-winning Harmony Pro XL laser. The laser produces a bright light energy that is absorbed by the concentrated patches of melanin in sunspots. The duration of the treatment is around 45 minutes but is dependent on the size of the area being treated.

Your consultation with Azthetics clinic

Before your sunspots and hyperpigmentation treatment at our Bristol clinic, we will discuss your concerns and examine your skin. A patch test will also be performed at the initial consultation to allow initial assessment of your skin tolerability to the laser. This will allow us to create your personal treatment plan which is tailored to you and your skin. We will also document your skin progress by taking some regular images throughout the treatment course.

How many treatments will you need?

Each client has individual needs therefore it really depends on size and depth of the treated area. However, most of our clients will start to see the first sign of positive results after one session. We would then recommend undergoing three to four sessions for the best results and long-lasting effects. Each session needs to be spaced approximately 4 weeks apart.

Before the treatment

It is recommended that you should avoid direct exposure to the sun prior to the treatment.

After treatment care

After your skin is treated with the laser, the treated areas may immediately appear red, this effect usually lasts for the first 24-48 hours but can be the case for up to 7 days. It is also possible to have post-procedural swelling which can last for up to 72 hours before self-resolving. The pigment can often appear darker initially following the treatment before gradually fading. Your skin after the treatment may feel very sensitive, it is recommended that you avoid the sun for at least two weeks and protect the skin with sunscreen with at least SPF 30.
