Hair restoration with PRP

Hair restoration – platelet-rich plasma (PRP)

Hair restoration with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a non-surgical, hair loss treatment for both, men and women. It is an innovative treatment which helps to stimulate hair growth naturally. This treatment is aimed to stimulate follicles that damaged to begin to produce healthy thick hair once more.

PRP is perfect for patients who do not want a hair transplantation procedure or want to use it as an adjunct to hair transplants in the future. If you are looking for an advanced, non-surgical hair loss treatment to help restore your hair growth, then Azthetics recommends this treatment for you.

How does hair restoration treatment work?

Platelet-rich plasma treatment (PRP) is a three-step medical process in which a person’s blood is drawn, platelet extracted and injected to the areas of the scalp where hair thinning and hair loss is occurring. Platelets and growth factors act locally in the scalp to stimulate hair growth and thickening.

Please see the video to learn more about the treatment process.

Treatment process

PRP therapy requires 4-6 sessions performed 4-6 weeks apart. The number of sessions you will need will be dependent on the degree of hair loss and the treatment goals. In most cases in order to maintain results, an ongoing annual treatment is recommended.

First, your blood is drawn, typically from the arm. The sample is then placed into a centrifuge machine that rapidly spins to accurately separate your blood fluids of different densities. The red cells sink to the bottom and are discarded, leaving the plasma, which is rich in platelets and growth factors.

Left in the centrifuge for 10 minutes, your blood will have layer into three levels of densities:

  • Platelet- poor plasma
  • Platelet-rich plasma
  • Red blood cells

Platelet-rich plasma is then drawn into a syringe and injected into areas of your scalp with reduced hair growth.

The results should be visible after two to three sessions, however, the effects will differ between individuals.

Your consultation with Azthetics clinic

During your consultation in our Bristol clinic, one of our doctors will assess your hair loss, as well as discuss your medical history, and get to know your expectations from the treatment. We will be able to give a clear picture on the number of sessions that will be required, the time scale of the treatment and any questions that you may have.

How many treatments will you need?

For the best chance of success, we recommend that PRP injections are administered over 4-6 sessions, 4-6 weeks apart. We will be documenting the process and effectiveness of the treatment and based on this, we will suggest repeating your single maintenance treatment once or twice a year.

PRP post-treatment aftercare

There are minimal restrictions after your PRP injections. This treatment will allow you to return to work or daily activities almost immediately. It is commonly advised that:

  • You should not touch the treated area(s) for at least 8 hours after the treatment.
  • Do not wet your hair for at least 3 hours after treatment.
  • Do not use any hair products for at least 6 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid exercise, excessive sun and heat exposure for 24 hours after your treatment.
  • Avoid using saunas, steam rooms and swimming for at least 2 days after your treatment.
  • Avoid caffeine, alcohols and cigarettes for 3 days after treatment. Smoking cause extending healing of the process and results will take longer.
  • Avoid hair colouring or any type of hair modelling products and devices (like hair straightener) for 3 days after treatment.
  • If possible, please avoid taking any anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen, Aspirin or foods like garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, and essential fatty acids.

PRP side effects

As PRP treatment uses your own blood, there are minimal side effects that occur. Some of our patients can experience some discomfort immediately after the procedure, although most of our clients don’t have any issues with the tolerability of the treatment both during and after. We do advise, that you may experience very mild swelling and tenderness in the treated areas of your scalp, lasting for no longer than 3-5days. Almost all evidence of the treatment has gone 24 hours post procedure.

Benefits of PRP treatments

  • It is a safe procedure. PRP hair treatment uses your own blood cells, there is no risk in allergic reaction or rejection.
  • Convenience – PRP does not require any recovery time, you can return home and your normal daily activities immediately after the session.
  • Minor discomfort – PRP is a non-surgical treatment, you should experience only minimal discomfort.
  • Effective – Our clients love the results and most report that they could see the difference in the hair restoration as well as added thickness to their hair. We would like to advise, that best results will be fully noticeable after about a year of regular treatments and aftercare.
  • Hair restoration treatment is a versatile procedure that can be also applied to facial hair as well.
