About the PRP Treatment Process
PRP therapy generally requires 4-6 sessions, each spaced 4-6 weeks apart, with the exact number of sessions depending on the severity of hair loss and personal treatment goals. Most individuals find that annual maintenance treatments help maintain their results.
The procedure starts with drawing blood, usually from the arm, which is then placed in a centrifuge. The centrifuge rapidly spins the blood to separate its components by density. The red blood cells settle at the bottom and are discarded, leaving plasma rich in platelets and growth factors.
After 10 minutes in the centrifuge, the blood divides into three layers:
- Platelet-poor plasma
- Platelet-rich plasma
- Red blood cells
The platelet-rich plasma is then drawn into a syringe and injected into areas of the scalp where hair is thinning. Results are often noticeable after two to three sessions, though individual responses can vary.

PRP post-treatment aftercare
Following PRP injections, there are very few restrictions, allowing you to go back to work or daily activities almost right away. However, it is advisable to:
- Avoid touching the treated areas for at least 8 hours after the procedure.
- Keep your hair dry for a minimum of 3 hours post-treatment.
- Avoid using any hair products for at least 6 hours.
- Refrain from exercise, excessive sun exposure, and heat for 24 hours after the procedure.
- Stay away from saunas, steam rooms, and swimming for at least 2 days.
- Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and cigarettes for 3 days, as smoking can extend the healing period and affect results.
- Do not colour your hair or use hair styling tools like straighteners, for 3 days.
- If possible, refrain from taking anti-inflammatory medications like Ibuprofen or Aspirin, and avoid foods such as garlic, flax oil, cod liver oil, and essential fatty acids.
PRP side effects
Because PRP therapy uses your own blood, side effects are generally minimal. While some individuals may feel a bit of discomfort immediately following the procedure, most find the treatment manageable throughout and afterward. It’s important to note that mild swelling and tenderness in the treated scalp areas may occur, but this usually subsides within 3-5 days. Most signs of the procedure should vanish within 24 hours.
